How to zip files with a password on Windows
Drag the files or a folder, hold Shift and drop them on Zip. Name the ZIP, tick Lock with a password, and a locked ZIP appears next to them.
The usual ways – and their catch
- “Compress to ZIP file” in File Explorer. Quick – but Windows can't add a password.
- Archive programs. Can do it, but it's another program to install and learn.
- Putting the folder in the cloud. Then it's not on your PC only anymore.
Pack files into a locked ZIP – the quick way with Velvet
- Select the files or a folder and start dragging. Anything – documents, photos, a whole folder.
- Hold Shift and drop them on Zip. Type a name for the ZIP.
- Tick “Lock with a password”. Type the password – the locked ZIP appears next to the files.
Strong (AES-256) is safest but needs 7-Zip or WinRAR to open; classic opens right in File Explorer. Velvet says which is which.
